Digital Fashion in Unreal Engine 5
With this Unreal Engine 5 demo shows off its current capabilities as a game-development tool with being easy to learn, powerful, and impressively versatile. And now it’s catching the attention of fashion designers, wanting to bring their digital fashion designs into to virtual realities.
Unreal Engine is a free cross-platform development engine used by thousands of developers worldwide. It was originally developed by Epic Games, who released it as open-source software in 2011. Since then, it has been improved and expanded upon by other companies and individuals. Unreal Engine 5 is the latest version of the Unreal Engine and was released in May 2021. It includes a number of new features and improvements over previous versions of the engine. These include the Nanite virtualized geometry system, which allows for the creation of photorealistic environments and characters, and the Lumen global illumination system, which provides more realistic lighting and shadow effects. Unreal Engine 5 is used to create a variety of games and other interactive content across multiple platforms, including PC, console, mobile, and virtual reality.
How does it relate to digital fashion?
With a vision of a metaverse, Unreal Engine is now increasing in popularity even outside of the game industry where fashion creators can create game-related or non-game-related fashion experiences with their digital fashion designs. In fact, Epic earlier this year released a free digital fashion course to teach what they believe are the digital fashion skills of the future. The course, Unreal Futures: Careers in Fashion, is available for free download from the website
